Asia has been a large source of many medicinal herbs and oils. The great castor oil also found its roots in tropical areas of Asia and Africa. Castor oil is know as arandi oil in hindi. The pale-yellow oil extracted from castor seeds is used for hair growth by many modern-day women. Castor oil feels sticky, thick and is mainly odorless. Due to these properties, it’s always blended with other oils for its use.  It has recently gained popularity, as it is heavily used in the beauty and cosmetics industry. The ricinoleic acid, a major nutritional component of castor oil has been proven to boost hair growth and add shine to it. Let’s dig deeper to know how the castor oil can be used and what are its benefits.

Ingredients:

  • Castor Oil- in its pure form (1 Teaspoon)
  • Almond Oil- 2 Teaspoon
  • Coconut Oil- 2 Teaspoon

Recipe:

  • Take a bowl, add 2 teaspoons of almond oil and coconut oil each. Add 1 teaspoon of castor oil to the mixture.
  • Heat this concoction using a double boiler method or microwave it for a couple of minutes. Do not directly heat the oil as it reduces its nutritional value.
  • Apply this tonic thoroughly into the roots of your hair and massage it gently with your fingers. Also, apply a little onto the tips of your hair.
  • Caution: Do not apply a lot onto the tips as castor oil being sticky, is difficult to wash off.

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair:

1. Boosts hair growth:

The ricinoleic acid along with omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, present in castor oil works wonders on hair roots. These nutritional components promote new hair growth and strengthen the already present hair roots.

2. Get rid of Dandruff:

Dandruff has been one of the common problems faced by many women, due to dry skin or fungus. The anti-fungal property of castor oil aids in fighting dandruff and maintains the pH of the scalp.

3. Decrease Split Ends:

Split ends may occur when the hair turns dry and brittle causing the hair shaft to weaken. Castor oil repairs the damaged hair shaft and increases the tensile strength of the shaft. This reduces its susceptibility to breakage and splitting.

4. Tame Frizzy Hair:

Castor oil works as a natural conditioner and penetrates the outer layer of the hair shaft. It helps in filling the damaged keratin spots. This process smoothens the hair cuticles and assists in taming the dry, frizzy hair.

5. Reduce Hair Fall:

Antimicrobial property of castor oil aids in combating microbes commonly found on the scalp. The ricinoleic acid helps in increasing the blood circulation of the scalp, hence improving the scalp and hair follicle’s health. This, in turn, helps in controlling the hair fall.

6. Helps in thickening of hair:

As we discussed before, castor oil penetrates the outer layer of the shaft and boosts the thickening of hair 3-5 times its usual rate. It is a simple and effective solution to maintain healthy hair.

7. Prevents greying of hair:

Usage of castor oil for hair can help you achieve a richer and darker look for the hair naturally. Humectant effect of the castor oil aids in retaining the moisture of the hair, thus giving it a dark shade. Usually, Jamaican black castor oil is used for this purpose.

8. Gives shiny hair:

Application of castor oil helps in retaining the moisture of the hair and puts a protective coat on the hair shaft. This reflects the light and makes the hair appear shinier and smoother.

9. Prevent hair damage:

The use of various chemical and hair styling products makes your hair more prone to damage. The fatty acids of castor oil improve the scalp’s health and replenish all the natural oils present in the hair. This protects your scalp and hair shafts from damage and maintains the health of your hair.
